KORAPUT: Koraput town's skyline was brightened up with bursts of colour in the form of hundreds of kites in different shapes and sizes on the occasion of the Fifth Kite Festival on Sunday. The festival, which was organized by a voluntary organization, was especially meant for children aged between 6 and 14 years and was inaugurated by the collector of Koraput, Rajesh Prabhakar Patil.

"The aim of the festival is to motivate the youth to aim high and to follow their aspirations as one follows a soaring kite, apart from popularizing kite flying among children. Kids these days are not interested in outdoor games and activities such as kite flying anymore as they are overburdened with studies and prefer to spend their spare time watching TV, surfing the net or playing videogames," said Ch Santakar, one of the organizer.

Around 300 children from several schools across Koraput town participated in the festival that was hosted in the stadium ground. While many children had brought specially-designed and decorated kites to participate in the festival, those who arrived at the stadium without their own were provided kites by the organizers.

Besides giving older kite-lovers a wonderful opportunity to soak in a colourful and fun time, the festival provided a wonderful opportunity for kids who have never flown kites to try their hand at the traditional pastime.

"I have never before got an opportunity to fly a kite. Though it looks easy, I realized one needs skill and technique to fly a kite. The direction of wind is very important. It was a great experience to participate in the festival and I look forward to coming here to fly kites next year as well," said Barsha Chowdhury, a Class VIII student who participated in the festival.

Three participants who took their kites to the maximum height were awarded with special prizes, and gifts were given to all participants to encourage them to take part in such events.

"Such events give children a collective joy that is much more motivating than any prize. Considering that kite flying is not very popular among children in urban areas nowadays, such festivals assume even more significance and need to be held in other areas as well to keep the tradition alive," the collector said.
